Steamed Veg Momos [RECIPE]

Learn to make popular Tibetan steamed veg momos aka dim sum.

Steamed Veg Momos With Spicy Chili Chutney 1

INGREDIENTS

For The Dough:
• Maida – 2 cups
• Oil – 1 tsp
• Salt – 1/2 tsp
• Milk – 4 tbsp + water for kneading soft dough

For Filling:
• Oil – 1 tbsp
• Onions, chopped – 1 medium
• Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp
• Carrots, grated – 1 cup
• Cabbage, grated
• Bell pepper, chopped – 5 tbsp
• Spring onions – 2 tbsp + 1 tbsp
• Chilies, chopped – 1 tbsp or as per taste
• Soy sauce – 1 tsp
• Salt to taste
• Black pepper – 1 tsp

INSTRUCTIONS:

For Making The Dough:
1. Combine all-purpose flour, salt, and oil in a mixing bowl. Mix well.
2. Add milk and mix well again.
3. Now add enough water to make a smooth dough, just like the chapati dough.
4. Cover it and let it rest for 30 minutes.
 
For Filling:
1. Heat oil in a pan.
2. Add the chopped onions and saute for 2 minutes.
3. Now add ginger garlic paste and stir well.
4. Saute on high heat for 2 mins.
5. Now add grated carrots, grated cabbage, chopped bell pepper, and 2 tbsp sliced spring onions greens.
6. Stir well and cook on high heat for 3 mins or until glossy.
7. Turn off the heat, and add the soy sauce, salt, black pepper, and 1 tbsp sliced spring onions greens.
8. Let it cool.
 
For Making The Dumplings:
1. Divide dough into 14-15 equal sized balls. Dust them with some dry flour.
2. Roll each dough ball thin into about 3″ circle, or until almost translucent.
3. The edges should be thin. Roll all the balls.
4. Wet the edge with some water.
5. Place about 1 tbsp filling in the center.
6. Bring one edge and start pleating as shown in the video above.
7. Twist to seal the dumpling. Stuff the rest of the dough balls in the same way.
8. Heat water in a steamer or a pan.
9. Cover the steaming basket with lettuce or cabbage.
10. Arrange the momos on the steaming basket.(Make sure to have some space between them, so they do not stick to each other.)
11. Place the steaming basket over the steamer or pan and steam for about 10 minutes.
12. Serve with momos chutney.

INGREDIENTS

• Tomato, cut into 4 pieces – 4 medium
• Dried Red chilies – 8-10 small or 4 large (You can also de-seed them)
• Garlic cloves, peeled – 3-4
• Ginger peeled – 1″ piece
• Soy sauce – 1/4 tsp (optional)
• Vinegar – 1 tbsp
• Sugar – 2 tsp
• Salt to taste

INSTRUCTIONS:

For Chutney:
1. Boil about 1½ cup of water in a pot.
2. Add tomatoes and red chilies to the hot water and boil on high for 5-6 minutes or until tomatoes skin start to peel off.
3. Turn off the heat.
4. Let it cool down.
5. Remove the tomato skin and drain the excess water.
6. Transfer peeled tomatoes, cooked dried red chilies, salt, sugar, ground black pepper, ginger, garlic, and vinegar.
7. Blend to make a smooth puree.
8. Serve with momos.
