Happy Sawan 2019: Today is first Monday of holy month of Shravan 2019 (sawan ka pehla somwar). Devotees of Lord Shiva across India have been lining up since early morning to offer prayers to their beloved God. The month of Shravan or Sawan began on July 17 this year. Today is the most auspicious day for all Shiva bhakts as it happens to be the first Monday, which according to Hindu mythology is known as the day of Lord Shiva. It is believed that anyone who offers prayers and special poojas such as jalabhishek etc, Lord Shiva fulfils her/his wishes.

Many devotees observe fast (sawan somvar vrat vidhi) on this day. While some take single meal during the day, others skip grain (ann) and just take fruits. While there are no set rules for worshipping Baba Bholenath, there is a special significance of ‘jalabhishek or offering water to Lord Shiva.

Shubh Muhurat of Savan Somvar Puja: While entire Monday is devoted to Lord Shiva, those offering special prayers must keep the shubh muhurats in mind. For today’s pujas, the shubh muhurat starts from 9:10 am and will end at 10:52 am. Shiva Bhakts must keep these days in mind for the upcoming important dates during month of sawan.

    July 22: Sawan’s first Monday.

July 29: The second Monday of Sawan.

August 05: The third Monday of Sawan.

August 12: Fourth Monday of Sawan.

    July 30: Shivratri

Significance of holy month of Sawan: It is believed that Lord Shiva had taken poison during ‘samundra manthan’ to stop the destruction of universe. Due to ‘halahal’, Lord Shiva’s throat turned blue. Hence, he is also called Neelkantha. It is said that in this month, the devotees offer jalabhishek to help Lord Shiva in fighting the after-effects of that poison. The devotees worship Lord Shiva and observe fast in the auspicious month of Shravan or Sawan. In the period of Shravan, the Shiva devotees give up eating non-vegetarian food and consume nutrient rich products.

For those bhakts, who don’t know Shiva Chalisa, News Nation brings you the English text of Chalisa that must be recited during your special prayer for Sawan Somwar.
